Well financed travellers from across the globe went in search of virgin land; upon finding they were suppose to send word back, but were torn.
The volcano on the island erupted destroying the boat they arrived on and turning the ones who wanted to leave to molten statues. They took this as a omen and decided not to tell anyone. Stories says that where they were from was cold, ran by a dictatorship and generally not a happy place to live or be.
